PARSONS — Avenging an earlier loss this season, Allen County Community College’s Red Devil volleyball team claimed a Jayhawk Eastern Division win over host Labette Community College Wednesday.
“They beat us in a sloppy match at the Fort Scott tournament and we wanted to play up to our level,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach. “Labette has a new coach and is still not as organized in its play.
“After an eye-opening first set loss, we faced the realization that our errors were giving them unearned points.”
The Red Devils turned things around taking the next three sets. They won the match 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-14. That put them at 2-0 in conference play and 4-3 overall.
Allen County goes to the Highland Community College tournament Friday and Saturday.
Led by last week’s KJCCC Division II Verizon Wireless Player of the Week sophomore Alli Jenicke, the Red Devils played well at the net. Jenicke had 17 kills.
Makhala Giardina delivered 12 kills at the net and Jordyne Seichepine had 10 kills. Hayley Mertens downed seven kills.
Jacqui Ortiz was credited with 26 set assists and Sabrina Stanley had 19 assists. Ortiz had two service aces. Nicole Reed, Stanley, Jenicke and Mertens each had on service ace.
“We made a few line-up changes and began to play better after the first set. We had a solid win in the second set then had to play catch-up in the third set,” Peters said.
“We had a service rally and a double stuff block from Alli and Ashley Douglas that got us the win.”
Peters said the Red Devils regained their form from set two to win set four. They led 7-1 and Jenicke served an ace to end the set and match.
Jenicke helped the Red Devils go 2-0 last week including a win over NJCAA Division 11 No. 16 Kansas City, Kan. Community College. She had double-doubles in both matches with 15 kills and 13 digs against Longview and 16 kills and 23 digs against KCK.
