COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Allen County Community College’s Red Devils sandwiched two wins between four losses over the weekend. The Red Devils ended up third out of seven teams at the Air Force Prep Academy Tournament.
“We had a rough Friday losing both of our pool matches in four sets. We struggled to find two points to finish,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach.
“Knowing what we wanted to do Saturday, we showed up and in the tournament round eliminated a No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed team to stay in the winners pool till the end.”
Odessa (Texas) beat Allen County 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 and Butler defeated ACCC 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17 on Friday.
The Red Devils bounced back to defeat New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) 24-26, 26-24, 15-11. Then they downed Butler 25-27, 25-14, 15-10.
“We played solid volleyball against NMMI and Butler to get the victories,” Peters said. “We faced Air Force Prep and lost a close first set by two points and struggled to find the win in the second one.”
AFP got past Allen County 25-23, 25-20. That put the Red Devils back up against NMMI losing in two sets. Peters did not have the scores from that match.
For the tournament, Alli Jenicke racked up 53 kills at the net and Jordyne Seichepine put down 40 kills. Makhala Giardina and Hayley Mertens each delivered 33 kills.
Also at the net, Randi Billings made six solo blocks and had 12 assisted blocks for the Red Devils. Seichepine had four solo blocks and five assists and Kaitlyn Speer had three solo blocks and five assists. Jenieke helped with seven blocks and had one solo while Mertens had one solo and five assists.
Jacqui Ortiz was credited with 84 set assists. Sabrina Stanley put up 40 set assists and Alisha Keith had 37.
Stanley came up with 80 defensive digs for the tournament. Jenicke had 74 digs and Ortiz had 52. Nicole Reed made 45 digs and Mertens had 47.
Allen County (8-10) goes to Highland Wednesday in Jayhawk Eastern play.
