Curtiss Bunch went 4-for-6 with three doubles and a home run driving in six runs for Allen County Community College Thursday. The Red Devils defeated Butler Community College’s Grizzlies 19-10.
It was just what the doctor ordered for the Red Devils, who had dropped a Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader to Fort Scott here Wednesday.
Allen County and Butler played one nine-inning game Thursday at Red Devil Field. Allen County improved to 24-21 on the season.
The Red Devils play at Johnson County, which leads the Jayhawk East, today. The Red Devils are 17-17 in conference play.
Allen County had two six-run innings in the game — the second and the fifth — to build a 16-6 lead. Butler scored four runs in the sixth but ACCC answered with two in its half of the inning.
Bunch’s third double of the game drove in the final run in the eighth inning. He had hit a three-run home run in the fifth.
In the sixth, Ryan Fike connected for his sixth home run of the year as a pinch hitter. Brad Alberts had three singles in the game and Bryce Williams had two base hits.
Brayden Brumley had a single and a double. Wyatt Hall doubled. Marcus Peavler and Spencer Putman each had a single.
Ben Pearson got the win in relief of starter Dylan Bowman. Bowman went 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on four hits and two walks plus had one strikeout.
Pearson pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, two walks and one hit batter. He struck out two. Aaron Burke picked up a save as he pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He gave up three hits, hit two batters and struck out two.
Allen County had 14 hits in a 10-5 loss to Fort Scott. Alberts had a solo home run. Connor McCrite hit two singles and a double.
Fort Scott used a six-run third to boost itself to an 8-6 win in the nightcap. For Allen County, Nick Fountain had two solo home runs and a single.
Allen County pitchers had trouble working out of trouble against the Greyhounds.
