Red Devils beat Blue Devils

Playing at home was the right prescription for Allen Community College’s softball team.

The Red Devils were coming off a four-game losing skid on the road when Kansas City, Kan., Community College’s Blue Devils came to Iola Tuesday.

 Allen County posted two victories — 3-1 and 9-3 — in Jayhawk Eastern Division play.

Allen evened its conference record to 5-5 and pushed out to a 17-11 overall mark. The Red Devils host Cowley County today at 2 o’clock.

Keelyn Bonar pitched six scoreless innings for Allen in the first game against Kansas City. She allowed three hits, walked two and struck out three. 

Audra Nelson pitched one inning and was charged with one run on two hits.

Allen scored a run in the second inning when Ashley Ribelin doubled and  then scored on a one-out triple by Lauren Poertner. The Red Devils plated two more runs in the third. With one gone, Erin Schwant walked and scored on a double by Maecy Charleston. Ribelin drove in a run with a base hit.

The other hits in the game were a single apiece by Charleston and Poertner and a single and a double by Bonar.

Allen cranked out 15 hits in the 9-3 win. Alex Hill went the distance in the circle for ACC, allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out five batters.

Hill scored the first run of the game when she singled to lead off the first inning and advanced to second on an error. Schwant had a bunt single and stole second base. Bonar singled to drive in a run.

Schwant stole home for the second run of the inning. Ribelin had an RBI single. 

Allen was up 3-1 when it scored three times in the bottom of the third. Each team scored two runs in the fifth and the Red Devils added a run in the sixth.

Bonar was 4-for-4 with three singles and a double plus she drove in three runs. Charleston was 3-for-4 with two base hits and a double. Ribelin had a single and a double, and Kaylee Lucas hit two singles.

Hitting a single each were Hill, Schwant, Kayla Van Vliet and Alexus Douglas.

Allen has scheduled make-up doubleheaders. The Red Devils play Independence at home April 4 and at Johnson County on April 14.
