LAWRENCE — Coming off a national championship last year in the 4×800 relay, the Red Devil men seem poised to make a lot of noise in that event again this season.
Last season, the Red Devils used a 7:44.57 to win the national championship in the event.
On Friday, they ran a 7:42.8 to break the school record and take second in the KU Relays at Lawrence — just getting edged out by Emporia State.
Chris Martin and Vinny Butera return from last year’s national championship team to represent two legs of the relay, but the fastest leg on the relay on Friday was Ka’Ven Berry with a 1:53.58 split.
The Red Devils were nearly 23 seconds faster than the next closest NJCAA school at the KU relays — Cowley County.
The Red Devils also shined in the distance medley with Glasgow and Butera teaming up with Ke’Voughn Manning and Philip Lagemann to run a 10:15.06.
That time was good enough to earn second in the event with only Fort Hays State edging them out of the top spot.
Lagemann also ran the 1,500 meters and took 22nd with a 4:03.33.
Jesus Gutierrez finished 37th in the same event with a 4:12.1.
WOMEN
Sophomore Asha Alvarez finished 15th in the triple jump with a 35’2.5”.
Sophomore Vicky Ibarra was 21st in the 5,000 meters with a 19.10.25.
Gemma Gonzalez and Hannah Johnson took 24th and 28th respectively in the 800 meters.
Gonzalez ran a 2:29.33 and Johnson ran a 2:32.94.
