FORT SCOTT — Two second-half scoring runs propelled Allen County Community College’s Red Devil women to their first Jayhawk Eastern Division win of the season Saturday. Allen County’s men allowed an 11-point halftime lead slip away and lost to host Fort Scott Community College’s Greyhounds in overtime.
The Red Devil women led 12-4 early then the Greyhound women bounced back to lead 16-15 with just under five minutes left in the first half. By halftime, the teams were knotted at 25-all.
Fort Scott opened with a basket then the Red Devil women reeled off 12 unanswered points. Allen County used a 15-2 run to extend its lead to 55-34 with 3:17 left in the game.
Allen County’s women (1-1, 6-8) had four score in double figures led by Jamie Peel with 14 points. Ebonie Jones and Rackell Goldson each added 13 points. Brittney Redmond had 10 points.
Fort Scott got 18 points from Jolee Sharp and Brittany Pearl had 10 points.
The ACCC men appeared to be headed to their first conference win also. They dominated the first half to lead the Greyhounds 40-29 by intermission.
After shooting 52 percent from the field in the first half, the Red Devils went 11 of 30 in the second half and overtime period. Fort Scott tied the game at 68-68.
Allen County had the basketball late in regulation but turned it over on a charging foul. The Greyhounds turned the ball over with 0.1 seconds left in the game.
A three-pointer by Terrell Shears got ACCC to within one, 76-75, at the 57-second mark of overtime. Julian Mills and Torrell Nickerson hit free throws to seal the 80-75 win.
Shears and Canon Fields each had 16 points for ACCC (0-2, 6-8). Drelan Tripplet scored 11.
Fort Scott’s men got 26 points from Mills, 15 from Austin Danner, 11 from Maurice Fields, and 10 each from Tony McGilveary and Derrick Thomas.
