CHANUTE — Allen Community College’s basketball teams took on rival Neosho County and earned different results on Saturday.
The women’s team rode the team bus back to Iola with a 78-73 win. The Red Devils had a 12-point lead during the first half, but that fell to a 34-32 lead at halftime.
Coach Rachel Janzen said the team was losing by one-point late in the second half, before putting together key defensive stops and knocking down 3-pointers. It also helped that Allen made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch.
Haley Wilson was key to the victory. Wilson finished the night with 30 points, making eight 3-pointers. Rachael Bruce’s defensive rebounding late in the game also helped lead to the win, Janzen said.
Daria Evans followed Wilson with 10 points. Erika Essman, Ashley Sally and Ashley Washington each added eight.

THE MEN’S team fell 107-79 to Neosho.
Coach Andy Shaw said the team led for the majority of the first half, but a late run by Neosho had the Red Devils down 40-32 at the break.
In the second half, Neosho extended its lead to double-digits. Allen closed the gap to 10 points, but Neosho’s offense made another run to put the game out of reach.
Allen’s Josh Sweet led the team with 28 points, hitting 6 of 10 3-pointers.
Neosho went 29-37 from the free throw line. Allen didn’t do as good of a job getting to the line — the Red Devils made 13-20 free throws.
Both teams take on Cowley at home on Wednesday, with the women playing at 6 p.m. and the men following.
