HIGHLAND — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil men swept the season’s two-game series with Highland Community College’s Scotties. The Red Devils downed the Scotties 82-71 on Highland’s court Wednesday.
The Red Devil women weren’t as fortunate facing the NJCAA Division II sixth-ranked Highland women. The Scotties rolled to a 78-39 victory.
With one game left on their regular-season slate, the Allen County teams are at home Saturday afternoon. The Red Devil squads host Johnson County Community College.
Start times have been changed for the ACCC games because the college is hosting a high school substate basketball tournament today through Saturday. The high school championship games are Saturday evening.
The Red Devil women, now 6-11 and 11-18, have a tall order Saturday against NJCAA Division II’s No. 1 team, Johnson County (17-0, 28-1). Tipoff for the women’s game is noon.
“We have one more opportunity to right the ship before our playoffs begin a week from Wednesday. Saturday is Rackell Goldson’s final home game in a Red Devil uniform as it is sophomore day,” said Mark James, ACCC women’s head coach.
Allen County’s men improved to 7-10 and 13-16 knocking off Highland (8-9, 15-14) Wednesday. The Red Devils take on Johnson County (6-11, 12-17) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Register did not receive information on Wednesday’s win for the ACCC men at Highland by press time.
Allen County’s women weren’t able to stay with the No. 6 NJCAA Division II Scotties. Highland built a 42-20 halftime lead.
“It was a tough night from the early moments of the game until the final horn,” James said. “I don’t want to attempt to take anything away from Highland but we seemed to be still suffering a hangover from the Cowley loss on Saturday.”
Allen County lost a 10-point lead in the final 1:20 Saturday at home against Cowley County.
The Red Devils shot 31 percent, 14 of 45, from the field and went 7 of 13 at the line at Highland.
