INDEPENDENCE — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil men cannot break into the win column in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. The Red Devil women had a rough outing against No. 14 Independence Community College’s Lady Pirates Wednesday night.
First, Allen County’s women lost 66-42 to host Independence. It was the first time back to ICC for ACCC head coach Mark James. James had served as an assistant coach for the Lady Pirates until last year when he had an assistant coaching job at Pittsburg State.
“I love the fact that our girls wanted to win this game so badly on my behalf,” James said. “I think that unnecessarily added pressure which hurt us in the long run.
“As frustrating and disappointing as it is to be beaten in this fashion, I believe this will ultimately help us grow as a team.”
Independence’s women jumped out quick and led 33-15 at halftime. James said the Red Devils “played hard for 40 minutes and refused to quit.”
Rackell Goldson fired in 12 points for the Red Devil women. Ebonie Jones added 11.
Twelve players scored for Independence. Kelby McGrath and Kamri Anderson each had 10 points as the Lady Pirates’ leading scorers.
The ACCC women fell to 1-4 in Jayhawk East play and 6-11 overall.
Allen County’s men are yet to win in five Jayhawk East outings. The Pirates notched only their second conference win beating the visiting Red Devils 62-48 Wednesday.
The Red Devil men are 0-5 and 6-10 overall. They played without starters Terrell Shears and Mychael Anderson. Shears injured his ankly in practice Tuesday and Anderson is out because of health problems.
