OVERLAND PARK — Challenging the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division II on its home court is never an easy task. Allen County Community College’s women weren’t able to hang with the Johnson County Community College’s Lady Cavaliers.
The Lady Cavaliers improved to 20-1 overall and 9-0 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play with a 64-36 win over the Red Devil women Wednesday. The Red Devils fall to 2-7 in conference and 7-14 overall.
Allen County’s men couldn’t keep the Cavaliers off the free-throw line. The Cavaliers cashed in on 19 of 27 charities on their way to a 75-65 win. The Red Devils were 7 of 16 at the line.
The Red Devil men fall to 2-7 in Jayhawk East play and 8-13 overall. Johnson County is 4-5 in conference and 9-12 overall.
The ACCC teams return home for a Jayhawk East doubleheader Saturday with Kansas City, Kan., Community College’s Blue Devil teams. The KCK women are 3-6 and 12-9 while the men are 4-5 and 16-5.
The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
Allen County’s women managed just 14 points in the first half against Johnson County’s tough defense. The Red Devils faced a 31-14 halftime deficit.
Johnson County’s Lady Cavaliers coasted on a 33-22 second-half run. The Lady Cavaliers shot 41 percent, 24 of 58, from the field for the game.
Allen County shot just 22 percent, 13 of 58 from the field. The Red Devil women were 5 of 9 at the free-throw line.
Most of the numbers leaned heavily Johnson County’s way. The Lady Cavaliers had 50 rebounds to Allen County’s 33. The Red Devil women did have 10 steals to Johnson County’s five.
Allen County turned the ball over 15 times. Johnson County had 16 turnovers.
The Red Devil women had only one double-figure scorer. Brittney Redmond had 12 points. Rackell Goldson, ACCC’s leading scorer, was held to seven points.
Goldson did pull down eight rebounds and Hannah Blackwell had seven rebounds. Miracle Davis dished out six assists.
Johnson County was led by Brianna Kulas and Polly Harrington with 13 points each.
