Red Devil squads drop road games

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil women weren’t able to gain any momentum from last Saturday’s victory. The Red Devil women lost 66-34 to host Kansas City, Kan., Community College’s Blue Devils Saturday afternoon.
Allen County’s men were hoping to spark something in Jayhawk Eastern Division. Their two conference wins have come on the road. A third, however, was not to be.
Kansas City’s Blue Devil men held the Red Devils at bay for a 73-62 win Saturday. It was a game that featured the top two scorers in the conference — Allen County’s Jason Smith, averaging 24 points a game, and Kansas City’s Dennis Tinnon, averaging 22.7 points a game.
There was no report made from Allen County,. nor were statistics available on the KJCCC website from the men’s game.
The ACCC men dropped to 2-9 in Jayhawk East play and 5-17 overall. Kansas City improved to 9-2 in conference and 18-3 overall.
Allen County’s women had trouble generating offense against Kansas City. The Blue Devil women led 34-15 at halftime.
“Only getting 39 shots up in games isn’t going to help us be successful in too many games,” said Sacha Santimano, ACCC women’s head coach. “We just couldn’t take care of the ball. We had a lot of unforced errors.”
Allen County had 24 turnovers in the game. The Red Devils shot just 31 percent, 12 of 39, from the field and went 4 of 10 at the free-throw line.
Kansas City (6-5, 15-8) connected on 26 of 58 field goals, 45 percent,  and sank 8 of 13 free throw attempts. The Blue Devils had a 39 to 28 edge in rebounding.
“We had our spurts of doing good things and we never stopped working,” Santimano said. “If we could control turnovers and rebounds, we could have also gotten some more shots.”
Danielle Best scored 10 points and had three assists for Allen County. Jazmynn Johnson added eight points.
Kynesha Nisbett made two steals and scored five points. Rackell Goldson pulled down eight rebounds and had three points.
Queona Walker and Aeriss McNeese each had two points. Maurissa Shaffer scored one point.
The ACCC women are 1-10 in conference play and 3-19 overall.
Allen County’s teams are at Highland tonight to make up games rescheduled from last Wednesday. The Red Devil teams host Coffeyville Wednesday in Jayhawk East play.
Allen County’s teams play at Johnson County Saturday to end the week of conference action.
