HUTCHINSON — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil men went 1-1 in the Hutchinson Classic hosted by Hutchinson Community College over the weekend.
On Friday, the Red Devils notched their third win of the season by defeating the Sterling College junior varsity 71-59. Allen County led 38-23 at halftime.
Jason Smith fired in 27 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out six assists for the Red Devils. Thomas Daniel added 13 points.
Terrell Shears tossed in 10 points and had 11 of the team’s 44 rebounds. Keevis Tukes made three steals and had nine points.
Allen County shot 47 percent, 28 of 60, from the field. They were 14 of 25 from the free-throw line.
The Red Devils held the Sterling JV to 38 percent shooting from the field (20 of 53). Each team had 26 turnovers.
Tahshaun Kelly added four points for ACCC. Scoring two points each were Tyler Myrick, Chad Rourk, Rickey Hollis and Robert Wright.
The Red Devils faced Hutchinson’s Blue Dragons for the second time this season on Saturday. The Blue Dragons turned a strong first half into an 80-54 win over the Red Devils.
Hutchinson manhandled Allen County in the first half. The Blue Dragons were up 37-20 at intermission and continued their run in the second half, outscoring the Red Devils 43-34.
Allen County went cold from the field, hitting just 19 of 61 attempts for 31 percent. The Red Devils downed 13 of 19 free throw tries.
Hutchinson shot 54 percent, 31 of 57 from the field and sank 12 of 17 charities. The Blue Devils held a 41 to 34 edge in rebounding.
Smith, who was 10 of 10 at the line, poured in 24 points for ACCC. He had seven rebounds, three steals and five assists.
Shears cleared seven rebounds and Jake Benton had six rebounds. Hollis and Tukes each had three steals.
Robert Goff led the Blue Dragons with 13 points; 11 players scored for Hutchinson. Joe Mitchell had 11 points and Stuart Sullivan had 10 points.
The Classic wrapped up the Red Devils’ pre-Christmas action. The Red Devils go into the holiday at 3-10 overall.
They are 0-2 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. They open the second half of the season — all Jayhawk East games — at home Jan. 5 against Kansas City, Kan., Community College.
