Allen County Community College’s golf team is competing in the Jayhawk Conference Championships today at Sand Creek Station golf course in Newton.
Last week, the Red Devils played in the Baker University Spring Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence. The Red Devils finished fifth in the rain-shortened tournament.
The Baker Invitational was scheduled as a 54-hole event. ACCC golf coach Mike Hayes said teams finished 36 holes on Wednesday in excellent weather conditions then, following numerous delays for lightning on Thursday, the rest of the tournament was canceled.
Evangel University won the team title with a 629. The top two medalists were from Evangel — Mark Budler and Tim McGinnis at 152 and 153.
Allen County had a team score of 661.
Rob Carlson shot a 74 in the first round, which was the best score in the 62-player field. Carlson finished fifth with a 155 after a second-round score of 81.
Bryant Welch placed 19th with a 166. He had rounds of 85 and 81. Nick Agnew shot a 169 (84-85), Will Clark was at 173 (83-90) and Gavin Cole carded a 181 (93-88).
“We wish we could have played the last round. We were off to good starts,” Hayes said.
The conference teams finish up today in the Jayhawk Championships at Sand Creek.
On Sunday, Allen County goes after a third straight NJCAA Region VI, Division II championship. The Region VI, Division II tournament is Sunday through Tuesday at Coffeyville Country Club.
The NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament is May 16-21 in Phoenix, Ariz.
