Jayhawk Conference golf is divided into two sessions — fall and spring — with three designated conference tournaments each session.
Allen Community College’s Red Devils opened the 2012 spring golf season at the Jayhawk Conference Designated No. 4 tournament at Emporia March 25-26. They finished seventh as a team with a 669 total for the 36-hole tournament.
Johnson County won the the tournament by three strokes over Hutchinson, 585 to 588. Conference-leading Dodge City was third with a 596 team total.
Johnson Coun ty’s Mario Funcic was the top medalist with a 140, shooting a tournament low 67 in the second round on the par 71 course.
“We are still very inconsistent as a team but improving,” said Mike Hayes, ACC golf coach. “Jake Weber played very well in the opening round shooting a 74 which put him in seventh place. He finished tied for 14th.”
Jake Weber is a freshman out of Santa Fe Trail High School in Carbondale. Allen has just two sophomores on the squad in Tyler Roth of Lyndon and Chase Tjelmeland of Topeka.
Other freshmen on the team are Clinton Moore of Ottawa, Jake Morrison of Yates Center, Chad Schmidt of Olpe and Seth Walden of Iola.
The conference tournament was played on the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
Weber had 18-hole rounds of 74 and 79 for a 153, tied for 14th. Moore finished in a tie for 31st at 165 (84-81). Morrison shot a 174 (88-86) and was 39th.
Walden carded a 177 (88-89) for 41st and Tjelmeland tied for 43rd with a 180 (88-92).
Allen played in the Bethel College Spring Invitational Monday. The tournament featured both two-year and four-year college teams playing at Hesston and on the Sand Creek Station (Newton) golf courses.
Allen plays in the Jayhawk Conference No. 5 tournament at on April 16 at Salina. The sixth designated tournament is the Jayhawk Conference championships at and Creek Station.
