Red Devil golfers hit conference links

Rob Carlson, sophomore from Topeka, is sitting at 19th in the Jayhawk Conference after two spring designated golf tournaments.
Carlson is on Allen County Community College’s golf team. Teams have played five of the six conference designated tournaments for the 2010-2011 season and ACCC is eighth.
The Red Devils played in the conference tournament Monday at Hesston. Carlson tied for 13th.
He ended up with a 158 for the 36-hole tournament. Ryley Haas of Hutchinson was top medalist with a 143, leading the Blue Dragons to a team victory at 596.
“We teed off in 44- degree weather and play-ed in 25-35 mph wind but it warmed up in the afternoon,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC golf coach.
The Red Devils combined for a 651 as a team to take sixth. Tim Stinnett, sophomore from Moran, finished 21st with a 161.
 Freshman Tyler Roth, Silver Lake, and freshman Casey Bettis, Berryton, were two strokes apart.
Roth shot a 165 and Bettis had a 167.
Chase Tjelmeland, a freshman from Topeka, finished with a 175.
“We played more consistently from round to round as a team and are showing improvement,” said Hayes.
There are three Jayhawk Conference designated tournaments play-ed in the fall and three in the spring.
At the first one of the spring, March 28 at Rolling Meadows in Junction City, Allen County was eighth with a 668 while Dodge City won the tournament with a 588.
Carlson was 20th at Rolling Meadows with a 158. Stinnett shot a 162, while Bettis had a 170. Tjelmeland carded a 181 and Roth had a 183.
The final conference designated tournament is this coming Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station golf course in Newton. It is the Jayhawk Conference Champion-ships.
The Red Devils  have won three straight NJCAA Region VI Division II championships. Carlson is the defending Region VI Division II individual champion and finished 49th in the 2010 NJCAA Division II Na-tional Tournament last May.
