Allen Community College’s Red Devils had a tough day on the golf course to open the 2012-2013 Jayhawk Conference golf season.
The Red Devils finished 10th, last, in the first Jayhawk Conference designated tournament. The 36-hole tournament ran Sunday and Monday at Hesston Golf Park in Hesston.
Johnson County won the team title with a combined score of 580 and Dodge City was second at 585. Allen posted a team score of 682.
Sophomore Clinton Moore, who is the Red Devils’ top golfer from a year ago, tied for 33rd with a 163. Moore is from Ottawa.
Cory LaFever, a freshman from Wichita, posted a 169 tying for 41st. Sophomore Seth Walden of Iola shot a 170.
Chad Schmidt, a sophomore from Olpe, had a 180 for the tournament. Freshman Kris Collins of Iola shot a 193.
The Jayhawk Conference is divided into a fall season and a spring season. There are three designated tournaments in each season.
“We were disappointed in our play the first tournament. We just did not play well,” said Mike Hayes, ACC golf coach. “The guys were trying, maybe trying too hard. It was the first time we’ve finished last in a conference tournament.”
Hayes said he expects better play from his six golfers as the season progresses. He said the three sophomores are being counted on as leaders.
“Clinton had a very productive summer playing a lot of competitive golf. He comes back and I expect him to be in the No. 1 spot for us again this season,” Hayes said. “Clinton is a steady golfer on the course.”
Walden plays both golf and basketball for Allen. Hayes said during the fall season, Walden has time constraints because of his situation.
“Seth came on late last year, as did Chad (Schmidt). Both played well for us in our last couple of tournaments,” Hayes said.
“Seth worked in and around a golf course this summer and has improved. As he gets more time with the game, he gets more consistent.
“Chad is working on his short game and is showing improvement over last year.”
The three freshmen are working on becoming consistent on the course. They making the transition to the college game.
