Allen County Community College’s Red Devils didn’t get a lot of on-course practice time before Jayhawk Conference golf play resumed last weekend. And it showed.
Allen County finished eighth in a field of nine teams in a Jayhawk Conference designated tournament. As a team, the Red Devils posted a 664 score in the two-day, 36-hole event at Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Junction City.
“It was OK for the first time out since we haven’t been able to practice much so far this spring,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC golf coach. “Hopefully, we can continue to improve.”
Sophomore Nick Agnew placed in the top 20. He shot 159 with rounds of 78 and 81 to tie for 15th individually.
Trevor Johanson, Johnson County Community College, won the tournament with a 151. One stroke back was Ben Lowman, Hutchinson Community College, at 152.
Only 11 strokes separated first place from 20th. Hayes said the scores were tight, especially from fifth through eighth.
The Jayhawk Conference splits its golf competition between fall and spring. There are six designated conference tournaments — three in the fall and three in the spring.
Hutchinson won the tournament, which is No. 4 designated, with a team score of 622.
Allen County now stands sixth in the Jayhawk Conference team standings. The Red Devils finished eighth in the conference a year ago.
Freshman Rob Carlson, who shot a 164 (83-81) for 24th place Sunday and Monday in Junction City, is 13th individually in the conference. Carlson is from Topeka, as is Agnew.
Sophomore Will Clark, Wamego, tied for 32nd with a 170 (86-84) and sophomore Bryant Welch, Goddard, tied for 35th at 171 (86-85). Sophomore Gavin Cole, Moran, tied for 43rd at 184 (96-88).
Also on the ACCC 2009-2010 golf team are freshmen Cole Starkey of Cottonwood Falls and Micah Specht of Chanute. Specht is not playing this spring because of an injury, Hayes said.
Allen County is the two-time defending NJCAA Region VI, Division II champion. Agnew was one of three Red Devil golfers who qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament last year.
Agnew finished tied for 109th at the national tournament.
