HUMBOLDT – Uniontown High’s Eagle girls made a strong bid to upend Erie High’s Red Devils Thursday night in Humboldt High’s Second Annual Emprise Bank Basketball Tournament.
They pulled to within six, 33-27, on a 14-4 run in the third quarter. It was a nine-point game when the Red Devils rattled off eight straight points to seal the 49-33 win.
Uniontown dropped to 1-1 in the tournament and 2-1 overall. The Eagles played Crest Friday night to conclude the round-robin tournament.
Erie, 2-0 in the tournament, took on host Humboldt Friday night. The Red Devils had a habit in Thursday’s game of finishing quarters with big runs, except the third.
Midway through the first quarter a field goal by Hayden Rathbun put Uniontown in front 7-4. Erie finished out the period with eight unanswered for a 12-7 lead.
Rathbun nailed a three-pointer with 4:18 on the clock in the second and the Eagle trailed 20-13. Erie’s blast to the break was one of nine points to lead 29-13.
The third quarter was Uniontown’s but the Eagles got no closer than six.
Uniontown shot a cool 29 percent, 12 of 42, from the field and was 7 of 12 at the free-throw line. Hope Jurgensen led the Eagles with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Rathbun and Tayler Shook each dished out four assists. Uniontown had 26 rebounds and 24 turnovers.
Bret McGuire score almost half of Erie’s points, finishing with a game-high 24. Erie was 5 of 7 at the line.
