GARNETT — Only two high school races and the junior high races were run before the thunderstorm swept in at Thursday’s Anderson County High Invitational.
“The junior varsity girls ran in the rain but the junior varsity boys and varsity races were postponed until Friday,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High cross country head coach.
So Iola High’s Mustangs and Fillies — most of them anyway — make a return trip to Garnett today to finish the meet. Smith said the Fillies will be without seniors Abby Works and Kristen Linn and the Mustang varsity won’t have Bryan Miller.
“They have prior commitments plus some of the junior varsity boys will not run because of jobs,” Smith said.
Iola’s freshmen boys ran under dry conditions Thursday and won. The Mustangs scored 40 points for first and Eudora was second with 51 points.
Tyler Powelson claimed first place in the race, running the 4K distance in 15 minutes, 47 seconds. Bryan Mueller took ninth in 17:44 as Iola’s other medal winner.
Michael Armstrong placed 12th in 18:14 followed by Arion Kunkler in 14th at 18:17 and Michael Wilson in 20th at 18:47.
Others placing for Iola were: 23. Brad Burtnett, 19:21, 28. Jeremy Spears, 20:13, 30 Paul Douglas, 21:02, 31. Levi Baker, 21:24, 33. Cody Conner, 21:59.
The rain started and the junior varsity girls were running in it. The Fillies’ top finisher in the race was Briann Burris in 29th at 22:38. Jordan Dillingham took 30th in 22:40 followed by Jennica Rausch in 46th at 23:45 and Chalene Hutton in 63rd at 26:10.
Humboldt High was also at the meet.
In the junior high races, Iola Middle School’s Blaine Klubek took fifth in the eighth-grade 2-mile run and sixth-grader Megan Klubek ran 16th in the mile.
