Preseason tournament week is next week. All seven area high schools are in tournaments within 25 miles — most are closer — of Iola.
Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs are in the Anderson County High Preseason Tournament in Garnett. The Iola teams are in the pool with Baldwin and Burlington. Host Anderson County, Chanute and Louisburg are in the other pool.
Iola’s pool play will be at the Garnett Elementary School, 305 N. Oak. Turn right at the same stoplight (Park Road) as you would turn left to go to Anderson County High School. Turn right on Oak Street.
The Fillies play Baldwin at 5 p.m. Tuesday followed by the boys playing Baldwin at 6:45. On Thursday, the Fillies take on Burlington at 5 p.m. and the Mustangs play Burlington at 6:45.
On Friday, the third-place teams from each pool play each other at 4 p.m. for the girls and 5:45 for the boys at the elementary school. The second place boys’ teams from each pool play at 4 o’clock at ACHS. The second place girls’ teams from each pool play at 7:30 at the elementary school.
The championship games — first-place teams from each pool — are at 5:45 for the girls and 7:30 for the boys at ACHS.
Marmaton Valley High, Humboldt High and Yates Center High all host preseason tournaments next week.
The 13th annual MVHS Preseason Tournament is a round-robin event. Teams in the tournament are McLouth, Northeast-Arma, Oswego and Marmaton Valley. Varsity and junior varsity games are played throughout the three-day event — Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Marmaton Valley’s teams play Oswego on Tuesday, Northeast on Thursday and McLouth on Friday. The Wildcats’ games are at 7 o’clock and 8:30 each night in the west gym.
Humboldt High’s tournament is also a round-robin event with both varsity and junior varsity games. Crest, Uniontown, Humboldt and Erie are in the tournament.
Crest’s teams play Erie and Humboldt takes on Uniontown in Tuesday’s actio starting at 4 p.m. in the Humboldt Community Fieldhouse. On Thursday, Uniontown plays Erie and Humboldt plays Crest starting at 4 p.m. and Friday’s games have Uniontown playing Crest and Humboldt play Erie teams with games starting at 4 p.m.
Yates Center’s Wildcat Winter Classic has undergone a little change as teams have dropped out. They are working to get eight schools back on board by next year.
Yates Center teams play West Elk in pool B at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Tuesday. The Wildcats don’t have another pool game because of the modified pool play with just five teams — West Elk, Altoona-Midway, Cherryvale, Sedan and Yates Center.
On Friday, there will be first-place and third-place games played in the Norris Gymnasium and east gym.
