Iola, Uniontown, Humboldt, Yates Center will host events

Kansas celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Kansas State Track and Field meet May 28-29 at the 2010 Kansas State High School All-Class Track and Field Championships in Wichita.
The road to state championships starts at regional  meets each year.
For the second time since 2007, Iola High will host a Class 4A regional meet May 21. It wasn’t planned that way since Iola is hosting the 2010 Southeast Kansas League meet, also for the second time, a week earlier on May 13.
“Girard was the original site but had to withdraw its request to host because of a problem with its track,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach.
“The (Kansas High School) activities association contacted our athletic director Martin Bambick. Hosting a regional is a huge undertaking as is hosting a league meet.”
Smith said he and Bambick checked with several people to see if they would be available both weeks. They would be able to work both meets, Smith said, plus Bambick had to acquire an automated timing service for the regional Friday.
“No one else in our cluster of 16 schools was willing to host or they had just a six-lane track,” Smith said.
“We will need volunteers to help with both the SEK and the regional meets. We know that Terry Lower, Jack Morrell, Jack Stanley and Larry Regehr will help run both meets. These guys do such a fine job each year at the middle school meets.”
Smith said the call is out for any one wanting to help. Those interested may call the IHS office at 365-4715.
Teams coming to the Iola regional track meet are Labette County, Chanute, Coffeyville, Columbus, Fort Scott, Anderson County, Girard, Independence, Prairie View, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Paola, Parsons and Spring Hill.
Humboldt, Marmaton Valley and Uniontown track teams are assigned to the Class 2A regional at Central High School in Burden.
Yates Center, Crest and Southern Coffey County track teams will be in the Class 1A regional hosted by Madison.
The top four finishers in each event qualifies for the state meet in Wichita.
