Going undefeated in the regular season speaks volumes when it comes to postseason seedings.
Humboldt High’s Cubs and Lady Cubs, both 20-0, earned the top seeds in their respective regional tournaments for next week. The Humboldt teams will play in Kansas Class 3A regional baseball and softball tournaments.
Uniontown High’s Eagle girls had a solid season also, going 14-4, which earned them a No. 1 seed in the 2012 Kansas Class 2-1A Softball Regional Tournament. The regional is hosted by Yates Center High’s Wildcats and has Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats in the tournament.
Marmaton Valley High’s boys earned the No. 2 seed in their Class 2-1A baseball regional hosted by Lyndon High School and are already in the semifinals. Yates Center High’s boys are fourth-seeded and open at home Tuesday.
In another Class 2-1A baseball regional at Arma, Uniontown High’s boys are seeded No. 4 at 2-15 and are in the semifinals. There are only four teams in the regional after Chetopa High bowed out of postseason play.
All the regional softball and baseball tournaments start Monday or Tuesday. The winners of each game qualify for respective state tournaments on May 25-26.
There are admission fees at each regional.
Class 3A
The Lady Cubs picked up a first-round bye in the seven-team regional at Cherokee. Host school Southeast (8-10) is the No. 5 seed and plays No. 4 seeded Riverton (7-8) on Monday. The winner plays Humboldt (21-0) at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals.
Waiting on the other side of the bracket is No. 2 seeded Frontenac. Frontenac (20-1) plays No. 7 seeded Erie (1-17) Monday. Pittsburg’s St. Mary’s-Colgan (14-6), seeded No. 3, plays Galena (5-13) in a first-round game Monday. The winners of these games play in the other semifinal Tuesday.
Winners of semifinal games meet in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The regional champion advances to the 2012 Kansas Class 3A State Softball Tournament in Manhattan.
The Cubs and second-seeded Caney Valley received first-round byes in the regional tournament hosted by Caney Valley High’s Bullpups.
Humboldt (21-0) awaits the winner of Monday’s game between Burlington (8-9) and Cherryvale (8-10), the No. 4 and 5 seeded teams. Neodesha (7-6) is seeded third and plays Eureka (2-15) on Monday and the winner plays Caney Valley (13-6) in the semifinals.
The Class 3A semifinals are Wednesday in Caney. Humboldt’s game will be at 2 p.m. and Caney Valley’s game is at 4 p.m.
The championship game is at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The winner moves into the 2012 Kansas Class 3A State Baseball Tournament in Manhattan.
