The pressure cooker that is postseason baseball and softball hit high gear Monday, with Crest High’s unbeaten baseball squad and Humboldt High’s softball team both taking one step nearer to their goals of a state tournament bid.
But the dreams of a state berth came to an end for Humboldt’s baseball Cubs, who fell in a hard-fought Class 3A Regional Semifinal to Girard, 11-6. The loss ends the Cubs’ season at 19-2.
Meanwhile, Crest rebounded nicely after an early misstep against Marais Des Cygnes Valley. The Lancers spotted MDCV an early 2-0 lead before cruising from there to win,14-3, to open the Class 2-1A Regional. Next up for the top-seeded Lancers is a semifinal showdown on Wednesday against the host and fifth seed Central Heights Vikings at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will advance to play either Southern Lyon County — which knocked off Yates Center, 17-2 — or Jayhawk-Linn Wednesday night for a state tourney bid.
Humboldt High’s Lady Cub softball team also had little trouble in dispatching Fredonia, 13-1 to open the Class 3A Regional at Humboldt. The Lady Cubs are set to face Burlington at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Humboldt Sports Complex. A win there puts Humboldt in the regional championship game against either Prairie View or Douglass Tuesday evening.
Elsewhere, Crest’s softball team saw its season come to an end, 15-0, to Central Heights in the 2-1A Regional hosted by Lebo. Marmaton Valey’s Wildcats also bowed out in a 10-3 loss to host Lebo, which advances to face top-seeded Yates Center. Yates Center’s team earned a first-round bye as the top seed.
Marmaton Valley’s baseball team also saw its postseason hopes dashed with a 10-0 loss to Pittsburg St-Mary’s Colgan in their 2-1A tourney at Pittsburg.
