With the winter sports season just days away from starting, postseason assignments for area high school basketball teams and the Iola High wrestling team have been announced.
Iola will have to get past only three other opponents in order to earn a state playoff berth in basketball, because of the split of Class 4A into two divisions.
The three opponents are Burlington, Anderson County and Prairie View. The Class 4A, Division II substate tournament will run March 6-8 at Anderson County. The winner advances to the state tournament March 12-15 at Park City in suburban Wichita.
Mustang wrestlers will head to Burlington Feb. 22 for the Class 4A Regional Tournament. Other teams are Baldwin, Burlington, Chanute, Columbus, Fort Scott, Frontenac, Anderson County, Prairie View, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Paola, Parsons, Santa Fe Trail and Spring Hill.
The Class 4A state tournament is Feb. 28-March 1 in Salina.

OTHER SCHOOLS’ designations in basketball:
— Humboldt will compete in the Class 3A Substate in Wellsville to take on the likes of Council Grove, Jayhawk-Linn, Osage City, West Franklin, Kansas City Christian, Central Heights and host Wellsville. The state tournament is in Hutchinson.
— Yates Center will host the Class 2A Substate against West Elk, Oswego, Oxford, Pittsburg-St. Marys Colgan, Pleasanton, Sedan and Uniontown. The state tournament for Class 2A is in Manhattan.
— Marmaton Valley and Southern Coffey County will be in Waverly for the Class 1A, Division I Substate. In addition to their hosts from Waverly, St. Paul and Marais des Cygnes Valley will compete for a berth in the state tournament in Emporia.

Preseason tournament information will be published later this week.
