BURLINGTON — Iola Middle School’s Pony volleyball teams notched the same record in their respective divisions at Saturday’s Burlington Middle School tournament.
Both the Iola eighth-grade team and the seventh-grade team won their first match of the day. They both lost the next two.
For the Pony eighth-grade, it captured a 25-10, 25-21 win over Prairie View.
Emma Piazza had six service aces, one kill and three assists to lead the Ponies. Torrie Lewis had five kills and one ace serve.
Kyra Moore had six set assists. Katie Shields served two aces and had two kills at the net. Emery Driskel had two kills and Jo Lohman had one kill. Chelsea Lea and Morgan Wilson each had a service ace.
Iola lost 25-17, 25-18 to Chanute. Driskel downed five kills and served an ace for Iola. Piazza had three kills, two set assists and one service ace. Shields and Addie Haar each had two ace serves. Moore had two assists.
Burlington defeated Iola 25-16, 26-24. Piazza served five aces, had a set assist and one kill while Moore had two ace serves, one kill and three assists.
Haar served two aces. Wilson and Driskel each had one ace serve. Lohman and Lewis each had two kills and Driskel had one kill.
“We had an excellent start to the day. We were working together and really moving,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade coach.
“Before today (Saturday), we were keeping the ball in play just not hitting it hard enough to score.”
Carlin said the eighth-grade team did a better job playing against Chanute than earlier in the season. She said Moore and Piazza set the ball well and Lewis and Driskel did a great job hitting the ball harder and to open spots.
In the seventh-grade division, Iola came out of the gates with a 25-14, 25-16 win over Prairie View. Mikaela Platt had two aces serves and served seven in a row in the second game.
Elise Wolf and Taylor Sell served well also, according to IMS seventh-grade coach Muffy Fehr. Taylor Heslop provided strong defensive play and Ashlie Shields had one kill.
Chanute beat iola 25-23, 25-15. Abigail Taylor and Platt were cited for good passing and Shields for nice sets. Heslop had a kill.
Burlington defeated Iola 25-12, 25-13. Platt had one ace serve. Shields and Heslop each had a kill.
Fehr said Taylor, McKayli Cleaver and Heslop did a good job passing the ball throughout the day. Valaree Burtnett made two good passes in the Burlington match.
The Pony teams are at home today hosting Parsons.
