Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade B-team nailed down a 25-19, 25-16 win over visiting Independence Middle School’s volleyball team Thursday.
The B-team got three service aces from Chelsea Lea and two ace serves each from Trilby Bannister, Katie Shields and Addie Haar. Lauren Hunt and Caressa Lowell had one service ace each. Hannah Stout and Shelby Smith had one kill each and Bannister had a set assist.
“The B-team worked hard to get a solid win. I was especially pleased with the play and leadership of Trilby, Hannah and Shelby,” said Terri Carlin, Iola eighth-grade head coach.
Iola’s eighth-grade A-team lost a tough, three-game match 25-15, 24-26, 16-14 to Independence. Carlin said the Ponies couldn’t seem to make a serve in the match and Independence was hitting the ball hard.
“We would work hard and make a great play to get the ball back only to hit our serve into the net,” Carlin said.
Emma Piazza served four aces plus a set assist and a kill. Morgan Wilson, Stout and Shields each had two ace serves. Jo Lohman served an ace and had a kill. Emery Driskel had a kill and Kyra Moore was credited with an assist.
Iola’s seventh-grade B-team defeated Independence 25-12, 25-10. In A-team play, Independence won 25-21, 26-24.
Leading the way for the B-team were Elise Wolf and Bobbi Sinclair, serving seven and five points, respectively in the first game. Taelyn Sutterby played well in the back row passing the ball. Cassie Delich served nine in a row and Chyanne Vaughn had seven straight in the second game.
“The girls had really great movement on the court in the match,” said Susan Walters, Iola seventh-grade assistant coach.
Abigail Taylor served 10 consecutive points in the first game of the A-team match for Iola. Ashlie Shields made several great saves and had two kills while Taylor Sell had three kills. McKayli Cleaver had five good serves and Mikaela Platt had six serves in the second game.
“Taylor Heslop kept the match close with good ball handling and two kills,” said Muffy Fehr, Iola seventh-grade head coach.
Iola’s seventh-grade teams host the Iola Net Games Saturday with the A-team division playing at the Iola High School gym and the B-team division at the middle school gym. Matches start at 9 a.m.
Iola goes to Chanute Monday.
