GARNETT — Both Iola Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade Pony girls basketball teams came away winners Thursday, taking down Anderson County.

The wins boost both teams to a 2-2 record so far this season.

The eighth-grade varsity won 34-14.

Both teams came out of the gates slowly, scoring only two points in the first quarter. But that’s when the Ponies started to pull away, outscoring Anderson County 10-2 in to take a 12-4 lead into halftime. The Ponies offense kept it up in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 10 and 12 points in the final two periods compared to a total 10 points for Anderson County.

Josie Plumlee had the hot hand, scoring a team-high 12 points on 6-16 shooting. Reece Murray followed behind with eight points and Ally Ellis, Chloe Sell and Jenna Curry each scored four. Hannah Hall had two.

Murray led the way with seven rebounds while Curry had six. Ellis had a team-high four steals and three blocks.

The seventh-grade Ponies also had little trouble with Anderson County as they won 27-12.

Iola led 8-2 after the first quarter and kept their six-point lead at the half after each team only scored two points in the second quarter. It was a huge 17 point third quarter that put the game away for the Ponies compared to just eight points for Anderson County. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Celina Caron had 12 of the Ponies 27 points on 6-14 shooting while Asha Houk had six points and Carly Dreher had four points. Dallyn McGraw and Cali Riley each had two points and Jadyn Kauffman had one point.

While Kauffman only had the one point, she led the Ponies in rebounding with six and Caron had a team-high seven steals. Four different Iola players registered a block in the game.

After three straight games on the road, the Ponies will return home on Monday to face Burlington.
