COLUMBUS — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade A-team used an 18-7 second-quarter run to boost themselves to a 42-29 win Monday.
The Ponies led 6-4 over host Columbus then sprinted to a halftime lead of 24-11.
“We attacked the basket with a lot more energy and much better effort,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach.
Isaiah Grover fired in 13 points and had four rebounds for the Ponies. Drew Faulhaber chipped in with 12 points. Kaden Macha had nine points and nine rebounds.
Alex Bauer collected five rebounds and scored four points. Shane Walden and Travis Hermstein each had two points.
The eighth-grade B-team also netted a win, 21-18, on the road. Adam Peterson scored seven points and Hermstein had six. Tyler Holloway and Brock Peters each added four points.
Columbus was able to pull out a 31-23 win in the seventh-grade A-team contest. It led 19-12 at halftime and Iola close it to 25-20 after three quarters.
“A much better effort. We still aren’t where we need to be but we are getting better,” said Taylor.
Brice Aiello led the way with seven points and 10 rebounds. Brett Taylor added six points. Colby works had four points and seven rebounds while Keanan Badders had four points and six rebounds. Gus Hopkins scored two points.
Columbus won the seventh-grade B-team game 22-2. Trevor Cox had Iola’s two points.
Iola travels to Parsons Thursday.
