Nothing like waiting to the last second to win a game.
That’s pretty much what Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade Ponies did Thursday night. Down 6-0 to visiting Royster Middle School’s Rockets, the Ponies finished off their only scoring drive of the night with no time showing on the game clock.
Garrett Wade grabbed a pass from Ben Cooper in a crowd of red Rocket uniforms in the end zone. That tied the game. Royster had scored in the second quarter.
The Ponies lined up for the two-point conversion play. They converted as Mason Snavely plowed over the goal line, sending the Rockets back to Chanute on the short end of an 8-6 decision.
“There was nothing pretty about this game but I’m very proud of these kids for a great finish,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head football coach.
Cooper was 4-of-8 passing for 60 yards. Chase Regehr made three catches for 59 yards and Wade had a one-yard catch.
Snavely rushed for 47 yards one nine carries. Seth Sanford had 29 yards on seven carries.
Regehr made nine tackles followed by Sanford with seven and Gage Cleaver with six. Ethan Scheibmeir recorded four stops and Colton Toney had three.
“Chase is turning into a pretty good football player having another good night. Seth played well at linebacker and Gage was outstanding from his cornerback spot,” Taylor said.
The seventh-grade Ponies are 2-1. They go to Pittsburg next Thursday.
