Ponies win Anderson County golf tourney

GARNETT — Playing through possibly the best season ever for Iola Middle School golf, the Ponies won its fifth tournament Wednesday.
In five outings in the 2010 season, Iola is perfect as a team. The Ponies combined for a 160 to take the team title at the Anderson County Junior High Invitational at Garnett Country Club’s golf course.
“We played well Wednesday,” said Dennis Nevin, IMS golf coach. “So far we are stepping up to the challenge.
“The boys are having a lot of fun.”
Independence was 13 strokes behind the Ponies with a team score of 173. Chanute took third at 184 followed by Anderson County with 188, Jayhawk-Linn with 190, Parsons at 191, Columbus at 194 and Pittsburg at 208.
Iola’s Kaden Macha shot a 37 for the nine-hole event. He took third but was tied with two others just two shots off the leader.
Spencer Walter of Anderson County won top medalist honors, carding a 35 on his home course.
Shane Walden and Weston Hines, Iola teammates, each finished with a 40. They picked up the fifth and sixth-place medals, respectively. Adam Peterson shot a 43 for the ninth-place medal.
Also for Iola, Isaiah Grover had a 44 and Matt Jacobs had a 49.
Iola goes to Chanute Monday then to Parsons on Thursday. The rescheduled IMS Invitational is May 3.
