INDEPENDENCE — Getting court time is important in volleyball. Iola Middle School’s volleyball team added some matches to its schedule.
“Because of the large number of girls participating here in Iola and at Independence and Chanute, a triangular was arranged to give the girls some extra plying time,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade coach.
Iola’s two teams swept through the competition.
Iola No. 1 beat Independence 25-10, 25-8. Cloey Burris had 10 ace serves. Joie Whitney had eight service aces. Bobbi Sinclair served four aces and had one kill at the net.
Iola No. 1 defeated Chanute 25-8, 25-7. Bayleigh Weide delivered 11 ace serves and Caitlin Dreher had nine. Sinclair and Whitney each had three service aces. Blaze Hobbs and Burris each had one ace.
“Blaze was our leader on the court against Chanute. She kept us moving and talking plus had some great saves at the net,” Carlin said.
Iola No. 2 got a 26-24, 26-24 win over Independence. Jessica Oakley and Briana Pennett each had seven straight serves in the match.
Iola No. 2 defeated Chanute 25-18, 25-9. Brynna Hollins served up nine straight points and Allyson Hobbs had eight consecutive serves.
Annette Rexwinkle, IMS assistant coach, said Klair Vogel had some great hits at the net and Judy Branstetter served well on the night.
“We had super serving in the Independence match. This group of girls really worked well together,” Rexwinkle said.
The IMS squads are at Burlington today.
