Iola Middle School’s A-teams had different outcomes at home Monday against Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan Junior High’s Panthers.
The Pony seventh-grade A-team locked down a 34-23 victory. The Ponies came back from a 9-7 first-quarter deficit.
Iola outscored Colgan 10-5 in the second quarter and kept the momentum in the third quarter. The Ponies went on a 10-2 run, then each team added seven points to their totals in the fourth quarter.
Chase Regehr fired in 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Braden Plumlee cleared 10 rebounds and scored four points. Ben Cooper had five points.
Ethan Scheibmeir, Gage Cleaver, Garrett Wade and Colton Toney had two points each.
“We did a very good job of pushing ball up the floor and finding the open man,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “Chase was fantastic tonight. He was aggressive and got the ball to the hole.”
Colgan blasted out to a 12-1 lead by the end of the first quarter of the eighth-grade A-team game. The Panthers had a 24-5 lead by halftime.
Iola outscored Colgan 13-11 in the second half but never got in the game. Colgan walked out with a 35-18 win.
“Just too many silly turnovers and mistakes on defense early on. Once we got settled down we didn’t do a bad job, It was just too late,” Taylor said.
Brett Taylor finished with eight points for Iola.
Brice Aiello had four points and six rebounds.
Keanan Badders pulled down eight rebounds and had one point. Colby Works scored three and Ethan Sigg had two points and six rebounds.
“We did a better job blocking out and rebounding tonight. These kids work hard. We’ll get better.”
The Ponies host Independence next Monday.
