Middle School Track and Field: Iola Invitational
Iola Middle School hosted its annual track invitational on Tuesday welcoming teams from all over the area to compete in the biggest middle school track meet in southeast Kansas.
Both the Pony seventh-grade boys and girls left with third-place finishes while the eighth-grade boys finished seventh and the girls finished ninth.
The meet was also special in that it served as the final home event overseen by Iola Middle School athletic director Terry Lower before retires after this school year.
At the meet, it was announced that in the future, this meet will be renamed the Terry Lower Invitational.
FOR the seventh grade boys, Kaster Trabuc finished first in the 3200 with a time of 12:43.08.
Holden Barker finished first in the shot put (340).
The 4×100-meter relay team of Justin McCullough, Eli Adams, Barker and Carter Hutton finished second with a time of 54.54 and the 4×400 team of Barker, Adams, Drake Mathew and Jarrett Herrmann finished third with a time of 4:43.06.
Adams also finished third in the 1600-meter run (5:55.62).
For the seventh grade girls, Layla Holding (30.0) and Celina Caron (30.69) finished first and second in the 200-meter dash.
Caron also got a third-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 42.
The 4×100 relay team of Jadyn Kaufman, Layla Holding, Hallie McDermeit and Caron finished first (1:00.10) and the 4×200 team of Abi Hurt, McDermeit, Aysha Houk and Holding also earned gold with a time of 2:10.47. The eighth-grade boys had two top-three finishes in Brett Willis finishing second in the 100 (11.99) and Kolten Lacrone in the shot put (371.5).
The eighth-grade girls had three top-three finishes led by Josie Plumlee who finished second in the 1600-meter run (6:25.23) and Ursula Billings finished third in the 3200 (14.36.86).
The 4×100 team of Plumlee, Billings, Hannah Hall and Trinity Loveall finished third with a time of 58.16.
Iola will compete today at Girard.
Other area schools
Humboldt middle school didnt get any top three finishes at Iola but several finished fourth including seventh-grader Maddox Johnson in the discus (82), eighth-grader Kirstyn Murrow in the 3200 (15:13.29) and the 4×400 eighth-grade girls relay team of Murrow, Kirsten Kobold, Taylor Korte and Katy Parker (2:17).
Marmaton Valleys Carissa Mattox came in first in the discus with a 78 foot throw.
