COFFEYVILLE — Ben Cooper, Brice Aiello and Andrew Garber posted undefeated records and captured gold medals at Coffeyville’s Roosevelt Middle School’s wrestling tournament Saturday.
The three Iola Middle School wrestlers won their respectively weight brackets. The Ponies came home with seven medals.
Cooper pinned Johnny Coltrane of Independence and Octavion Cook of Parsons in his 75-pound weight class. Aiello edged Austin Waltrip of Caney, beat Osric Edwards of Parsons 17-5 and beat Rico Cherico of Cherryvale 11-3. Aiello took the gold at 134-pound by pinning his IMS teammate R.J. Holding.
Garber made quick work of Christian Thorton of Cherryvale, pinning him in 16 seconds. Garber went on to pin Sam Freisburg of Caney, Max Jones of Independence and Clay Holloway of Cherryvale to win the gold at 155 pounds.
Mason Snavely was 2-1 on the day for second place at 90 pounds. He pinned Garret Virgil of Cherryvale and shut out Trenton Jones of Eureka 11-0. He lost 2-0 to Jackson Stafford of Independence.
Nate Streeter was second in the 165-pound B bracket. Streeter won 14-5 in double overtime against Marcus Martinez of Independence. Streeter was pinned by Jordan Mason of Independence then bounced back to pin Dallas Zillifro of Cherryvale.
Rhett Allen went 1-2 for third place at 141 pounds. Judith Brandstetter lost twice but took third place in her 80-pound bracket.
Nathan Evans went 1-2 in the 115-pound A bracket, Domanick Bresee and Seth Sanford each were 1-3 on the day at 127 -B and 180-A brackets, respectively. Holding was 0-4 in the 134-pound bracket and Brody Silcox went 0-3 at 220. These five wrestlers did not place in their respective brackets.
“We had less wrestlers at this tournament but the ones we did take did well and battled,” said Aaron Sweazy, IMS wrestling coach.
The Ponies travel to Parsons on Nov. 28 for the Parsons Middle School tournament at Labette Community College.
