Ponies hit mat at IMS Classic

Wrestling at home is always good.
Iola Middle School’s Ponies hosted six other teams at the 2010 IMS Classic Tuesday. The wrestling tournament was held at the Iola High gym.
In their second tournament of the season, the Ponies finished up with five first-place performances on their home mat. Several of the IMS wrestlers recorded their first wins of the season.
“I definitely saw an improvement from how we wrestled last week,” said Ron Schomaker, IMS head wrestling coach. “The guys fought hard during matches.  It was a good home tournament.”
Eighth-grader Trey Colborn cruised through his heavyweight bracket for first place. He pinned Zak White and Nick Noland, both of Coffeyville and Alex Vaugh of Burlington.
Andrew Garber and Wyatt  Hines were first and third in their weight bracket. Garber, a seventh-grader, defeated his IMS teammate then beat Alex Gepford and Andrew Forrest, both of Frontenac and Ethan Stahl of Prairie View. Hines had wins over Gepford and Stahl while losing to Forrest.
Jake Gumfory and Chandler House, both seventh-graders, went 1-2 in their weight bracket. Gumfory got wins over House and Austin McWilliam of Bur-lington. House defeated Mc-William.
Taking first place was eighth-grader Kaleb Mock. He beat Jake Trumbly of Anderson County, Trent Phelps of Prairie View and Dillon Roedel of Frontenac.
Going 3-0 in his bracket was Trevor Cox, eighth grade. He beat Joseph Rolf of Prairie View and Rylee Kyser of Coffeyville. Cox and Cody Calvert of Prairie View were both 2-0 when they met in the final round with Cox winning the match.
Jonathan Tidd placed second his his bracket. Tidd, an eighth-grader, pinned Tanner Vaughn of Coffeyville then lost to Josh Young of Burlington, who took first. Tidd beat Clayton Sharrow of Prairie View.
Also posting a 2-1 mark was Bryce Aiello, a seventh-grader. He had wins over Jax Pimental of Frontenac and Jake Rundle of Anderson County. Aiello lost to Colton Breashers of Burlington.
Brock Peters, eighth-grader, and Gus Hopkins, seventh-grader, were second and third in their bracket. Peters got wins over Tyler Burrell of Burlington and Hopkins but lost to Andrew Faucett of Frontenac. Hopkins got his win against Burrell.
Third-place went to eighth-grader Scott Hill. After losing to Trey Natalini of Frontenac and Brody Thayer of Prairie View, Hill defeated Alex Edwards of Central Heights.
Seventh-grader Zach Breithaupt took third losing to Mick Weatherbe of Anderson County and Trevor Glasgow of Burlington.
Brett Taylor, a seventh-grader, was fourth in his weight bracket, dropping matches to Ethan Hess of Frontenac, Maddie Goode of Anderson County and James Louden of Central Heights.
Tryston Ingle, eighth-grade, sandwiched a win over Acetin Benedick of Priarie View between losses. Ingle lost to Darian Turner, Coffeyville, and Gavin Holler of Central Heights.
Daniel Ware, seventh-grader, lost to Kyel Oshel of Central Heights and Sam Dowd of Burlington.
Eighth-grader Alex Bauder finished third in his weight bracket. He pinned Alex Dennison of Anderson County then lost to Terry Dowd of Burlington and Jamal Logan of Coffeyville.
It was the third year for the tournament as the IMS wrestling program is in its fourth year of competition.
The Ponies go to Independence Monday.
