Iola Middle School’s golf team finally got to play at home. The IMS Invitational came on the final day of the Ponies’ season.

It was scheduled for April 4 but bad weather postponed the home tournament.

Eight middle school golf teams hit the Allen County Country Club golf course Monday afternoon. Coffeyville won the tournament with a combined total of 179.

Chanute’s Royster Middle School took second with a 189 for the nine-hole event. Pittsburg finished third with a 194.

There were 37 golfers in the co-ed division and 12 playing in the girls’ division.

Iola’s Toni Macha claimed second in the girls’ division with a 55. Abbe Funk of Chanute shot a 49 to take top honors.

Taylor Sell of Iola carded a 62 for fifth. Iola’s Brook Storrer finished with a 66 for eighth place.

Garrett Wade led the Pony boys with a 50 to finished 12th. Colby Works shot a 54 for 16th. Ryan Eyster carded a 65 and Aaron Terhune had a 69 for Iola.

Central Heights’ Matt Percy won top-medalist honors for the tournament. Percy, son of Iola High head baseball coach Mark Percy, shot a 38.

Three Coffeyville golfers — Nick Becker, Logan Vacca and Anna Pool — came in with 41s. They finished 2-3-4, respectively, in the standings. Dylan Funk of Chanute had a 43 for fifth place.

Jake Austin shot 44 and Noah Vaughn had a 45. Both are from Pittsburg and ended up sixth and seventh.

Chanute’s Skyler Gericke had a 48 for eighth and teammate Jarren Lewis won a scorecard playoff over Parsons’ Lee Head for ninth. Both shot 49s.

“I saw a lot of improvements this year,” said Iola Middle School golf coach Stacey Crusinbery. “I know the students will continue to improve as they master the mental aspects of the game.

“I expect most of our players will be playing quite a bit this summer and will be ready to compete again next year.”
