Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade girls held Pittsburg scoreless for three quarters Saturday. The Ponies led 10-0 at halftime on their way to a 19-2 victory.
That came on the heels of a 26-13 loss to Parsons earlier in the morning. The Ponies went 1-1 and earned second-place team medals in the 2010 IMS 7th Grade Pony Stampede Tournament.
The Pony Stampede is really two three-team tournaments played at the IMS gym and the Iola High gym.
Parsons, which defeated Pittsburg, took first in Iola’s tournament. All three teams were awarded medals.
At the high school, Chanute’s Royster Middle School placed first. Independence was second and Pittsburg No. 2 was third.
“We did some very good things throughout the tournament,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “We had a little bit of a letdown in the parsons game but overall the girls did a good job.”
Against Pittsburg, Makaela Platt and Tyria Harvey each had four points. Micaiah Larney added three points. Scoring two points apiece were Cassie Delich, Elise Wolf, Taylor Sell and Hannah Ingle.
“Cassie, Micaiah and Tyria got a chance to play a lot in the Pittsburg game and they really played well,” Taylor said.
Parsons was up 11-7 at halftime on Iola and outscored the Ponies 15-6 in the second half.
Platt fired in five points and Sell had four points. Ashlie Shields and Ingle each had two points.
The IMS seventh-and-eighth- grade teams travel to Columbus today.
