Ponies and Cubs open track season at Humboldt home meet

Middle School Track: Iola Ponies and Humboldt Cubs

The Iola and Humboldt Middle School track and field teams opened up their seasons at Humboldt’s home meet on Thursday. The Yates Center and Southern Coffey County middle school teams also competed at the meet.

Both teams were fairly successful with the Iola seventh and eighth-grade boys and the seventh-grade girls teams finishing in first place while the eighth-grade girls finished second.

The eighth-grade Humboldt girls finished first overall while the seventh-grade girls finished second. The eighth-grade boys finished fourth and the seventh-grade boys finished third.

For the Pony eighth-grade girls, Hannah Hall finished first in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 750-meter hurdles. Josie Plumlee also recorded a first-place finish in the 1600-meter run.

The 4×100 relay team also finished first for the Ponies.

For the Lady Cub eighth-graders, Madi White was the lone first-place finisher. She finished first in the 800-meter run right in front of fellow Cub eighth-grader Kirstyn Murrow.

The eighth-grade Pony girls were led by Celina Caron who grabbed first in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the high jump. The Iola 4×200 relay team also finished first.

For Humboldt, Morgan Hunter finished first in the 75-meter hurdles but that was all. 800-meter runner Elizabeth Melendez and the Medley relay team finished second for the Lady Cubs.

On the boys side, the Iola seventh-graders finished first in all but five events.

Carter Hutton finished first in the 100-meter dash and Justin Mccullough finished first in the 200-meter run. Drake Mathew finished first in the 800-meter.

Kaster Trabuc grabbed first in the 1600-meter run and Jarrett Herrmann finished first in the 75-meter hurdles.

Holden Barker finished first in the shot put and the 4×100, 4×200 and the medley relay team also finished first.

Humboldt’s Aiden Gean finished first in the long jump and second in the 100-meter dash.

The seventh-grade Iola boys didn’t place nearly as many athletes at the top of the podium despite their first-place team finish.

The 4×100 relay team ended up in first along with Kobe Lord in the long jump and Kolton LaCrone in the shot put. The Ponies had 14 other top-six finishes.

For Humboldt, Drew Wilhite finished first in the 3200-meter run along with the medley relay team.
