RICHMOND — In a nice change of pace, Iola and Crest Middle Schools’ track teams were greeted with pleasant weather Thursday at the Central Heights Invitational.
The athletes took full advantage, none more so than Iola’s Braden Plumlee and Olivia Taylor.
Plumlee captured the IMS eighth-grade record in the 3200-meter dash. Plumlee’s time of 11 minutes, 44 seconds shaved three seconds off the old school mark set by Aaron Stauffer in 2002. Taylor, meanwhile, won the seventh-grade girls’ 1600-meter run with a time of 5:59.0. She shaved four seconds off Misty Powelson’s old school record of 6:03.5 set in 2003.
Plumlee narrowly missed bringing home a second gold medal. His 1600-meter time of 5:23.1 was one-tenth of a second behind the winner.
Meanwhile, Crest’s Gage Adams was a two-time gold medalist. He won the shot put and high jump in the seventh-grade boys division.
Iola now sets its sights on the IMS Invitational Wednesday at Riverside Park in Iola, one of the largest track meets in the area at the middle school level.
