With their season winding down, Iola Middle School’s girls played at home Thursday against Pittsburg Community Middle School.
Pittsburg rallied in the second half, outscoring Iola 17-7 to win the eighth-grade A-team game 23-19. The Ponies were up 12-6 at halftime.
“The effort was outstanding. We just couldn’t come up with a play when we needed it,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head basketball coach.
Jo Lohman scored six points and had six rebounds. Kyra Moore and Emma Piazza had five points each. Emery Driskell pulled down eight rebounds and scored two points.
Pittsburg won the eighth-grade B-team game 11-9. Hannah Stout tossed in six points for Iola and Addie Haar added three.
The IMS seventh-grade A-team missed a good shot at the buzzer, losing 8-7 to Pittsburg. Pittsburg was up 4-3 at halftime.
Taylor Sell scored five points and grabbed five rebounds for the Ponies. Tyria Harvey added two points.
“The girls really played hard and fought the whole game,” Taylor said.
Pittsburg took the B-team seventh-grade game 10-8. Scoring two points each were Ashlie Shields, Harvey, Micaiah Larney and Taylor Heslop.
The IMS eighth grade plays in a Winter Classic in Pittsburg Saturday. The Ponies play Girard at 10 a.m. and Pittsburg at 11.
Iola Middle School’s girls conclude their season at home Monday against Parsons. There will be three games starting at 3:30 p.m.
