Katie Weide couldn’t have picked a better time for her only basket of the night Monday.
Weide’s shot from inside with about 10 seconds left in overtime lifted the Iola Middle School seventh-grade B team to an 11-10 win over visiting Independence. Her bucket came after Independence had made up a late three-point deficit to force overtime.
In other action, the Ponies fell in the seventh-grade A team contest, 27-13; in the eighth-grade A team affair, 50-21; and in the eighth-grade B team matchup, 23-11.
Monday’s games begin a frenetic week for the IMS squads. They’ll travel to Coffeyville today to take on Roosevelt Middle School. The Iola teams host Fort Scott Thursday before traveling to Burlington for a tournament Saturday. Another home game follows next Monday against Royster of Chanute.

IOLA’S eighth-grade A team led 10-8 after one quarter before Independence responded with an 18-4 run in the second period and an 18-3 explosion in the third.
“The girls came out and really played well for the first 10 minutes,” IMS head coach Marty Taylor said. “We just couldn’t keep it going tonight.”
Colbi Riley led the Ponies with 15 points and two rebounds. Olivia Taylor followed with two points and three boards. Madison Carlin also had two points. Katie Bauer and Carly Cescon each scored one point. Bauer pulled in a team-high five rebounds.
Scout Rush’s four points led Iola’s eighth-grade B team. Makayla Bycroft, Cescon and Carlin each scored two points. Taylor added one.

IN THE seventh-grade A team contest, Independence led 5-2 after one quarter and 13-6 at halftime. A 10-2 Independence run put the game away after three quarters.
“The score got away from us a little in the third quarter, but these girls have come a long way since the season started,” Taylor said.
Piper Moore was the catalyst, scoring seven points with eight rebounds. Kendra Sprague added four points and seven boards. Mia Aronson scored two.
Aronson scored four points for the Ponies in the seventh-grade B team win. Kassy Shelby added three points and Shaylee Sutterby had two.
Weide’s bucket marked the only time Iola scored in overtime.
The teams were knotted at 9-9 at the end of regulation after Independence hit a free throw and basket in the waning moments to erase a 9-6 deficit.
