BURLINGTON — The Fillies have only played three days worth of volleyball so far this season and have already been able to match last year’s wins.
Tuesday’s straight-sets victory over Prairie View (25-21, 25-20) gives the Fillies their fourth win this season, but Iola coach Jeff Fehr isn’t satisfied with where the Fillies are and says his team still has a lot of work to do to reach its potential.
“Movement is killing us right now,” Fehr said. “We just don’t move. We are content with just receiving and when the teams are a lot faster we have to move.
“I guarantee you that practices from here on out will be movement and serving. Serving let us down again.”
The Fillies serve percentage for the night was .650.
Beating Prairie View for the second time this season was certainly a good sign for Fehr though. After beating Prairie View earlier this season, Fehr sensed that his team may have overlooked the Buffalos and that resulted in a closer match than he would have liked.
“Prairie View pushed Burlington to three sets, so Prairie View is no slouch or anything,” Fehr said. “I think we might have gotten a little over-confident.”
Confidence is a tough thing for the coaching staff to harp on the players for too much though, because it is also the area Fehr says he has seen the greatest growth from a year ago.
“They are confident,” Fehr said. “They have a great attitude. We just have to put a little bit of hard work and concentration with that and it should go a long way.”
Iola lost its other match on Tuesday night in straight sets to Burlington with the Fillies losing the first set 25-17 and the second 25-21.
Senior Sydney Wade directed the Fillies offense the entire night and led the team in assists. Sophomore Piper Moore, junior Colbi Riley and senior Riley Murry were the primary hitters for Iola.
FRESHMEN
The Fillies freshman team picked up its second win of the season with a straight-sets victory over the Buffalos.
They won the first set 25-19 and the second 25-22. Iola coach Addie Haar was very pleased with the play of Sadie Overall in the win.
Iola fell to Burlington, 25-11, 25-20.
