A youth shoot, which will instruct youngsters on everything from shotguns to B-B guns, is Saturday.
The event is sponsored by the Kansas First Upland Pioneers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, an organization dedicated to conserving wild turkeys and the state’s hunting heritage.
The event is open to boys and girls 17 and younger. Adult supervision is required.
A $10 registration fee pays for lunch, the course instruction and a one-year subscription to Jakes Country Magazine, as well as an opportunity to win a free gun.
The event will kick off with a dog demonstration at 11:30 a.m, followed by a mandatory safety course at noon. Lunch is at 12:30.
The youngsters will report to shooting stations at 1:30. Archery, B-B gun, .22 rifle and shotgun trap shooting stations are available.
The event is on land owned by Craig Abbott northeast of Carlyle.
To get there from Iola, go north on U.S. 169 to Texas Road, go east one-quarter mile, then north another half mile. The cabin is on the left side of the road.

On a broad scale, the NWTF has a role in conservation of habitat and wildlife, including more than just turkeys. This area once offered some of the best quail hunting in the nation, so good that it drew sportsmen from far and wide. The group is working to restore area quail populations.
The youth shoot was pushed back from May 5 because of snowy weather.
