Iola freshman Ashleigh Nicholas has been racking up the points for the Iola track and field team all season, whether it has been in varsity or junior varsity meets.
The trend continued on Monday at the Iola Junior Varsity Invitational, where Nicholas picked up three first -place finishes.
“She performed very well,” Iola coach Dana Daugharthy said. “I am extremely excited to see what she will do at the Pioneer League meet on Thursday.”
She won the long jump with a jump of 14’8.5” and swept the hurdles events by running a 17.31 in the 100-meter hurdles and a 54.40 in the 300-meter hurdles.
Kanyon Beasley picked up a second- and third-place finish for the Mustangs. He took second in the javelin with a 132’3” and his 96’10” discus throw earned him a third-place finish.
“Kanyon has really grown over the last two years as a thrower,” Daugharthy said. “At the beginning of the season, he was throwing 112’ and now he is throwing 132’. His improvement is great and he is peaking at the right time.”
Austin Rohr and Trevor Stover gave the team a boost with strong performances in the pole vault.
“Both of these guys are first-year vaulters and they are still learning the intricacy of the event,” Daugharthy said. “They are progressing nicely and have a ton of potential.”
Rohr cleared 9’6” to take second-place and Stover finished fourth with a 9’0”.
Blake Haar took fourth in the 800-meter run.
Freshman Cole Regehr finished second in the 2-mile and third in the mile.
“Having young freshmen runners on our team, like Blake and Cole, has really allowed us some flexibility with our team,” Daugharthy said. “We are going to be able to do a lot of things with these young distance runners in the future.”
Iola’s next event is Thursday when they travel to Anderson County for the Pioneer League meet.
