PARSONS — A pair of Iola High newcomers took to the tennis courts for the first time Monday.

Iola’s Josie Plumlee and Molly Riebel each made their debuts at a Parsons Invitational Junior Varsity Tournament.

Plumlee, who shifted over to tennis from cross country, played in the No. 1 singles slot and went 0-3.

“She played singles for the first time ever and made steady progress,” Mustang head coach Chris Belknap said. “She is a very fast athlete, and I enjoyed watching her run all over the court as she was learning what to do in each situation. As each game went, she learned what to do and reacted quickly.”

Molly Riebel, who had been sidelined with a foot injury through the early portions of the tennis season, played in No. 2 singles, going 0-3.

“Molly played well, even though she didn’t want to play singles,” Belknap said. “Molly has been working on getting her serve more precise, and has really come a long way in her short amount of time practicing.”
