NEOSHO — Allen Community College volleyball lost in five sets Wednesday night to rival Neosho. Allen won the first and second sets, 25-21 for both of them, then lost two straight with scores of 25-16 and 25-23. Allen lost the tiebreaker, 15-8.
Coach Jessica Peters said the team began the match with extreme effort and a high level of effective offense. The Red Devils’ serve-receive worked much more consistently compared to their effort against Labette Community College on Aug. 27, Peters said, allowing Allen to run big plays.
Peters said the same effort was used in set two, giving the Red Devils a two-set lead.
Neosho changed things up in the third set and took a quick 9-3 advantage. Peters said the Red Devils had plenty of chances to earn points on Neosho errors, but struggled to come back and lost.
The fourth set went back and forth, with teams trading points.
“Halley Scott was covering all the ground she could see to keep us in major plays,” Peters said. “But, she can’t be everywhere.”
With the set tied at 23-23, Neosho scored the next two points to win the match. During match point, Raquel West slipped during her transition, resulting in Allen playing the ball up and away.
In the fifth and final set, Neosho got an early lead forcing ACC to play catchup the entire set. Allen ended up droppig the tie-breaker, 15-8.
Peters saw success come from multiple players. Setter West had 19 assists. Outside hitter Carly Jackson lead the team in kills with 11, only having one error in 19 attempts.
“(Halley) Scott, who was a clutch defensive passer for us tonight charting 32 digs, received 31 serves and only had one error,” Peters said.
Allen next takes the court at 6 p.m. Monday at Wentworth Military Academy.
