YATES CENTER — Marmaton Valley Junior High’s basketball teams picked up a pair of wins Monday.

The MV boys edged Yates Center 32-30, while Marmaton Valley’s girls emerged with a 26-8 victory.

On the boys side, MV overcame an early six-point deficit by outscoring Yates Center 12-4 in the third quarter to take a 20-18 lead.

The teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with Marmaton Valley emerging with the two-point win.

“It was a hard fought game on both sides,” MV head coach Byron Marshall said, while citing the team’s defense, and rebounding by Brayden Lawson and Kolby Cook as the keys to victory.

Tyler Lord scored 12 points for Marmaton Valley, followed by Lawson and Cook with six apiece. Todd Stevenson and Kason Becker each scored four.

MARMATON Valleys girls were on a roll in their 18-point win.

“The girls really played hard,” head coach Dah Uhlrich said, after MV improved to 2-1 on the season.

Lexi Lowder led the way with 11 points, followed by Dan Deer with eight, Braelyn Sutton with six.

If there’s one area for improvement, it’s at the free throw line, Uhlrich said. Marmaton Valley went 3-10 from the stripe.

Marmaton Valley’s B team won, 8-4, in two quartes to improve to 2-0 on the season.
