MVJH hosts Westphalia

MORAN — Marmaton Valley Junior High’s basketball teams wrapped up the pre-Thanksgiving portion of their schedules Monday with a 3-1 record against Westphalia.
The Wildcat boys won both of their games. The A team prevailed, 44-36, while the B team emerged with a 38-16 victory.
The Wildcat girls lost a 15-14 heartbreaker in the A team contest. The MV girls B team won, 24-20.

IN BOYS A team action, the Wildcats broke open a 19-15 lead with a 15-9 run in the third quarter to push into a double-digit lead, 34-24.
Justice Pugh led the way with 16 points, followed by Tristan Fraker with 10. Trevor Wilson scored six, Brock Hall had three and Gage Griffith, Caiden Elliott, Korbin Smith and Jordan Thompson each scored two.
Elliott poured in 17 points to lead the way to the B team victory. Griffith followed with six and Isaac Heskett had five. Trent Vest chipped in with four and Thompson, Kiefer Endicott and Hall all had two.

THE GIRLS A team contest was tightly fought throughout. Marmaton Valley led 7-6 after one quarter before Westphalia pulled even at 10-10 at halftime. The defenses controlled the pace in the second half. Marmaton Valley scored only single buckets in the third and fourth quarters, and missed six free throws in the fourth quarter. Westphalia had only one free throw in the third period and two baskets in the fourth period, but that was enough to escape with the win.
Trinitee Gutierrez scored 10 points to lead the way for the Wildcats. Shayla Brooks added three points and Megan Ensminger scored one.
Sarah Spillman and Shailee Woods shared high scoring honors for Marmaton Valley’s B team with eight points each. Kaitlyn Knavel added four. Emily Smart and Karlie Stephens each scored two.
The teams resume action next Monday at Northeast.
