PLEASANTON – Marmaton Valley Junior High’s basketball teams went on the road Thursday and won in their first action after the holiday break.
“The A-team boys finally got back from Christmas break at halftime,” quipped Arlyn Briggs, MVJH boys coach, after the Wildcats trailed 17-11 to host Pleasanton Junior High’s Blu-Jays at intermission.
The Wildcats used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game. They won 29-23.
“They came back from being down and showed the best determination they have had this year,” Briggs said. “Our full-court press was very effective, especially in the third quarter.”
Brady Newman had a game-high 18 points for Marmaton Valley. Keagan Boyd added six points. Gage Adams scored three and Dane Myers had two points.
Marmaton Valley’s boys won the B-team game 22-17. Cody Wilson led the way with 12 points. Jake Kale had four points.
Scoring two points each for the Cats were Jake Wise, Seth Swaggerty and Klay-Von Dowe.
Marmaton Valley’s girls broke out of a 9-9 first-quarter tie with Pleasanton. They outscored their hosts 9-6 in the second, 2-0 in the third and 7-2 in the fourth quarter to win 27-17.
Lindsey McNeil fired in 10 points for Marmaton Valley. Ashlynn Pinkerton had seven points while Misty Storrer and Mackenize Tynon each had four points. Kyla Drake added two.
The Wildcat girls won the B-team game 8-2. Trinitee Gutierrez scored six points and Aubrey Ard had two.
Marmaton Valley teams host Oswego Monday.
