MVHS teams lose at St. Paul

ST. PAUL — Finishing up regular season play on the road Thursday, Marmaton Valley High’s baseball and softball teams lost to St. Paul High’s Indians.
St. Paul won the baseball games 9-1 and 12-2. Marmaton Valley fell to 6-14 overall and 5-7 in Three Rivers League play.
On the softball diamond, the Indians claimed an 11-7 win over the Wildcat girls. That finished the varsity season for the Wildcats.
Marmaton Valley’s girls also played a junior varsity game against Uniontown at St. Paul Thursday. Uniontown won 8-0 on a seven-run fourth inning.
For the Wildcat boys, they trailed 2-0 after two innings then St. Paul scored three more runs in the third. St. Paul added to its lead to win 9-1.
Cole Becker went three innings, leaving because he was ill, and Ryan Smith worked three innings. Austin Harrison had two doubles while Jimmy Frye and Sage Hall each had a single.
Marmaton Valley opened the second game by scoring twice in the first inning. The Wildcats weren’t able to put up any more runs and lost 12-2 in five innings.
Frye took the pitching loss and hit two singles. Harrison doubled. Smith and Levi Ramsey had a base hit apiece.
“We play Oswego Monday at home in our first regional game,” said Derek Scharff, MVHS head coach. “We split with Oswego this season so we know we can win. We will have to show up and play better than we did Thursday.”
Marmaton Valley’s girls were locked in a 4-4 tie with St. Paul through four innings. The Indians scored three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.
The Wildcats tried to rally pushing across three runs in the seventh. It wasn’t enough.
Maggie Meiwes was the losing pitcher. Kayla McNutt connected for a two doubles and a single while Kaitlin Ensminger had a double and a triple.
Jamee McEndree, Mich-elle Heskett and Morgan Henry had two singles each. Hannah Endicott, Meiwes and Kacie Shadden had a single apiece.
Marmaton Valley’s girls travel to Oswego Monday in the first round of the Kansas Class 2-1A Softball Regional Tournament they are hosting.
Semifinals and championship games will be played at Moran Tuesday.
